What to know before you order cbd.
What CBD is
CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid found in both cannabis and hemp plants. Unlike THC, it does not produce the cannabis high, although many products contain both. In Massachusetts you will find CBD as oils and tinctures, gummies, capsules, and topicals, sold either as cannabis products through licensed retailers or as hemp products elsewhere.
Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate
These labels describe how a product was formulated. Check the measured CBD and THC amounts and the ingredients rather than assuming a particular effect or zero THC from the marketing name.
- Full-spectrum. Keeps the plant's other cannabinoids, including some THC.
- Broad-spectrum. Keeps other cannabinoids, with THC removed or reduced.
- Isolate. CBD on its own, without the plant's other cannabinoids.
Formats and how they compare
Oils and tinctures are measured with a dropper, so the amount is adjustable. Gummies and capsules come in fixed servings that are easy to repeat. Topicals are applied to the skin. Whatever the format, the milligrams of CBD (and THC) per serving on the label tell you what you are actually getting.
Why the lab report matters
Cannabis products sold by Massachusetts licensed retailers, CBD included, must be tested by a state-licensed laboratory before sale. The certificate of analysis for the batch shows the measured cannabinoid content, which is the number to rely on when comparing products.
Retail products and medical claims
An approved prescription CBD medicine is different from a retail oil, gummy, or balm. A retail product description is not evidence that it treats pain, anxiety, or a sleep disorder.
