Westfield — Whip City, college town, biggest city by area in Hampden County.
Westfield is the largest city by land area in Hampden County (47 square miles) and one of the older English settlements in western Mass (1660). The Old Burying Ground on Mechanic Street has graves dating to the late 1600s; Westfield Athenaeum is one of the oldest public libraries in the Commonwealth. The nickname Whip City comes from the late-1800s industrial heyday when over 40 whip companies operated here, manufacturing the majority of buggy whips sold in the United States. The Westfield Whip Manufacturing Co. building still stands on Elm Street as a historic landmark. Modern Westfield is anchored by Westfield State University (founded 1838 as Westfield Normal School by Horace Mann — ~5,800 students on a 256-acre campus along Western Avenue) and Stanley Park (300 acres of urban green space on Western Avenue). The Westfield River runs through town. Barnes Memorial Park, Hampton Ponds State Park, and the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail round out the recreation options. We deliver to all of it — every residential street across 01085 and 01086. The college periphery has strong 21+ student demand; just remember we can't deliver onto WSU campus (no on-campus housing per MA law), only to off-campus apartments and houses on the adjacent streets. Free over $75 minimum. Cash/Debit/Chime/Venmo/Check/MO.
